PUNCH LINE: I think Google's so called real time search offering does change the competitive landscape, possibly by a great deal, and especially for all the other real time search offerings out there. However much of WOWD's competitive edge remains intact.

DETAILS: I played around a bit with Google's so called real time search and wondered what it meant, with respect to WOWD.

I was immediately struck by how instantaneous it was, which results from Google's sterling computational infrastructure, which WOWD cannot approach at this time.

I was also immediately struck by how this might dramatically reduce the competitive edge that WOWD has over Google in real time search. There are things that Google now does that seem similar to what WOWD is trying to do, as least in the public eye. Even if as Mark points out, Google does not index the entire web in real time, it does not require much imagination to think their real time offerings are just getting started, and that there will be much more coming that could indeed close WOWD's competitive edge.

However one very important thing that Mark did NOT address is the question of what happens if and when Google can somehow close the gap and index meaningfully large portions of the web in near real time.

In that case, Google still would lack the essential feature of WOWD, which is that it indexes the Web people actually GO TO, rather than the web that can be crawled.

Several important things derive from this fact, and only one of them is that WOWD is real time. In this the competitive gap would close. However the competitive gap would be unaffected in other key things that distinguish WOWD. Chief among these are:

1. WOWD returns only the sites that people care enough about to actually go to, not just those that happened to change recently.

2. WOWD indexes the deep web

Best of luck to Wowd. I knew one of the central team guys way back in junior high/high school days, and he's great-- very smart, fun, energetic, and kind.
